Christian Kirchner House

The Christian Kirchner home was built in 1867.  It was the first frame dwelling in Peterson and Clay County.  It is standing on the original site and only minor structural changes have been made.

Fort Peterson Blockhouse

Fort Peterson was one of a string of forts constructed in 1862-63 by troops during the Civil War known as the Northern Border Brigade.  Fort Peterson's blockhouse is the only remaining vestige of the entire fortification chain (Peterson Heritage, Inc.).

Grand Avenue Community Outreach

This century old former hotel building in historic downtown Spencer has been converted into a non-profit outreach center, but that doesn't take away from the amazing history inside. Royal Schoolhouse Museum

Visit the old country schoolhouse, located north of the Community Center.  It was formerly the Riverton No. 8 Fair Play School, was built in 1935, and moved to Royal in 1947.  The building was used as classroom for some time before it closed.  Restoration began in 1999. 

Inside, visitors will find school house items and community information about Royal's businesses, churches, and schools that were formally located in the town.  Open by appointment.  Call City Hall for details.

Sleepy Hollow Aronia

Aronia berries are one of the healthiest berries in America.  Sleepy Hollow Aronia, located near Peterson, offers a short season where you can pick your own berries.  The aronia berry is usually ready to pick in September.  Contact the Pingels to arrange a visit.
