The Clay County Fair Grandstand will feature a moving patriotic tribute to America’s veterans by the Oak Ridge Boys and special guest Jimmy Fortune of the Statler Brothers on Monday, September 10 at 7:30 p.m.
One of the most distinctive and recognizable sounds in the music industry, the four-part harmonies and upbeat songs of The Oak Ridge Boys have spawned dozens of country hits and a number-one pop smash, earned them Grammy, Dove,
widely acknowledged as among the most exciting anywhere.
Jimmy Fortune toured, sang and performed with the legendary Statler Brothers for 21 years. He performed his first show with them on January 28, 1982, in Savannah, Georgia and quickly lived up to his name. Fortune wrote the group's second No. 1 hit, "Elizabeth," and followed that with two more No. 1 hits -- "My Only Love" and "Too Much On My Heart."

Tickets are on sale for Spencer Community Theatre's next production of "Barefoot in the Park." Although the action of this play takes place in 1970s New York, the story proves that love's tests are timeless. Main characters Corie and Paul are fresh off their honeymoon and ready to start their life together as newlyweds. Writer Neil Simon takes the simplistic and skillfully weaves in enough of those "moments" nearly every newlywed can relate to, and creates one of theatre's sweetest and funniest romantic comedies.
Show performances are Feb. 24, 25, Mar. 2, and 3 at 7:30pm. Matinee performances are Feb. 26 and Mar. 4 at 2:00pm. Get your tickets at the SCT Box Office or by calling 712-262-7336. We hope to see you there!

Spencer, IA - The Clay County Fair lived up to its billing as the “World’s Greatest County Fair” by receiving four awards from the International Association of Fairs and Expositions (IAFE) at the 121st Annual IAFE Convention held last week in Las Vegas.
“Receiving these awards is a testament to the hard work and dedication that our Board, staff, superintendents and volunteers show each September,” said CCF Secretary/Manager Jeremy Parsons. “We are truly honored to receive this international recognition.”
The IAFE awards program allows member fairs to enter competitions based on competitive exhibits, agricultural education and communications. The entries are evaluated and judged by teams of industry leaders.
For the awards program, the more than 3,000 member fairs of the IAFE are split into five categories based on attendance. The Clay County Fair competes in Division 3, which is limited to fairs across the globe with an attendance of 250,000-500,000.
The Clay County Fair claimed the following awards:
- First Place, “General Display Photo,” Competitive Exhibits Awards sponsored by North American Midway Entertainment. The photo, taken by fair photographer Judy Hemphill, featured the Fair’s antique tractor display.
- Second Place, “Overall Agricultural Program for Non-Ag Fairgoing Public,” Agriculture Awards sponsored by John Deere. The Fair’s entry, which included Grandpa’s Barn, finished behind the program at the Georgia National Fair.
- Second Place, “Agricultural Photo Series,” Agriculture Awards sponsored by John Deere. The series of photos, taken by fair photographer Judy Hemphill featuring a youth exhibitor showing baby doll sheep, finished behind an entry from the Greater Jacksonville (FL) Agricultural Fair.
- Third Place, “Fair/Sponsor Exhibit Program,” Agriculture Awards sponsored by John Deere. The Fair’s entry of the milking cow sponsored by MaxYield in Grandpa’s Barn finished behind entries from the Nebraska State Fair and Kansas State Fair.
The 2012 Clay County Fair September 8-16 with world class grandstand entertainment, 7 stages of free entertainment, GoldStar Amusements on the Midway, over 650 commercial exhibits, thousands of competitive displays including livestock, creative culinary, creative activities and agriculture! Although it is not Thanksgiving day quite yet, I know you will all be with family and friends tomorrow, so this is my day to wish you all a "Happy Thanksgiving". Since Thanksgiving is about giving "thanks", this is a great opportunity to share our "thanks".
In my family, we all share one thing that we are thankful for, as I am sure many of your families do the same. We all have so much to be grateful for, especially those of us that have family, a roof over our heads, and food to nourish our bodies. On this Thanksgiving, I am thankful for my Heavenly Father, my amazing family I have been blessed with, trusting friends, a great county support system, and our country. Although we are not in the best of times, I have faith that we can make it through anything.
In this holiday season, embrace the moments you spend with loved ones. Cherish each and every moment full of laughter and love. As a wise Cesare Pavese once said, "We do not remember days; we remember moments!"
Happy Holidays,
