It's official! Spencer has been named a Blue Zones Demonstration Site! Other cities named were Cedar Falls, Waterloo, and Mason City. Governor Branstad made the announcement this morning in Des Moines. We are so proud of Spencer and can't wait to begin the process!

Go Blue!
We are very excited Spencer has been chosen as one of the 11 finalists for the Blue Zones Initiative! The Blue Zones Project Team arrived for the site visit today. We hope we impressed them with all the reasons Spencer is "thriving" and we left them with no doubt about how our community will succeed in this life-changing endeavor.

On Sunday, take a drive to Royal to enjoy RCA Bingo from 1pm - 3pm in the Royal Community Building. Lots of great prizes will be awarded. The event is sponsored by Royal Community Action.

Spencer, IA - The Clay County Fair lived up to its billing as the “World’s Greatest County Fair” by receiving four awards from the International Association of Fairs and Expositions (IAFE) at the 121st Annual IAFE Convention held last week in Las Vegas.
“Receiving these awards is a testament to the hard work and dedication that our Board, staff, superintendents and volunteers show each September,” said CCF Secretary/Manager Jeremy Parsons. “We are truly honored to receive this international recognition.”
The IAFE awards program allows member fairs to enter competitions based on competitive exhibits, agricultural education and communications. The entries are evaluated and judged by teams of industry leaders.
For the awards program, the more than 3,000 member fairs of the IAFE are split into five categories based on attendance. The Clay County Fair competes in Division 3, which is limited to fairs across the globe with an attendance of 250,000-500,000.
The Clay County Fair claimed the following awards:
- First Place, “General Display Photo,” Competitive Exhibits Awards sponsored by North American Midway Entertainment. The photo, taken by fair photographer Judy Hemphill, featured the Fair’s antique tractor display.
- Second Place, “Overall Agricultural Program for Non-Ag Fairgoing Public,” Agriculture Awards sponsored by John Deere. The Fair’s entry, which included Grandpa’s Barn, finished behind the program at the Georgia National Fair.
- Second Place, “Agricultural Photo Series,” Agriculture Awards sponsored by John Deere. The series of photos, taken by fair photographer Judy Hemphill featuring a youth exhibitor showing baby doll sheep, finished behind an entry from the Greater Jacksonville (FL) Agricultural Fair.
- Third Place, “Fair/Sponsor Exhibit Program,” Agriculture Awards sponsored by John Deere. The Fair’s entry of the milking cow sponsored by MaxYield in Grandpa’s Barn finished behind entries from the Nebraska State Fair and Kansas State Fair.

You can tell that winter has arrived, when our yards are a winter wonderland, you layer because it is below zero outside, and you put blankets in your car just in case! Although it is a bit chill this Tuesday morning, you cannot beat a picturesque Clay County winter morning.
Tonight, the Spencer Chamber's Business After Hours will be hosted by F8 Focus, from 5 to 7, at their studio. Stop by and mingle! Also, make sure and get your tickets for Steel Magnolias! The first show starts this Friday.

Also, we are gearing up for a great community event, tomorrow, in Spencer! We have Splash & Flash Blue Day, to enhance Spencer's voting efforts, in becoming a Blue Zones Community! People will have the opportunity to vote for Spencer, at four locations (Del's Garden Center, Fareway, Southpark Mall, and Hy-Vee Gas). Also, Hy-Vee Gas is offering a $.15 discount on gas, from 9-11AM. Looking forward to a fun weekend!

Happy Thanksgiving!
Although it is not Thanksgiving day quite yet, I know you will all be with family and friends tomorrow, so this is my day to wish you all a "Happy Thanksgiving". Since Thanksgiving is about giving "thanks", this is a great opportunity to share our "thanks".
In my family, we all share one thing that we are thankful for, as I am sure many of your families do the same. We all have so much to be grateful for, especially those of us that have family, a roof over our heads, and food to nourish our bodies. On this Thanksgiving, I am thankful for my Heavenly Father, my amazing family I have been blessed with, trusting friends, a great county support system, and our country. Although we are not in the best of times, I have faith that we can make it through anything.
In this holiday season, embrace the moments you spend with loved ones. Cherish each and every moment full of laughter and love. As a wise Cesare Pavese once said, "We do not remember days; we remember moments!"
